Dungeon Divers - First Major Update! v0.8

Lots of good stuff in this update!

I had a lot of fun putting this game together, and plan to update it to a fully-released, if simple, finished state. This update represents the first step in that plan!

In my into text, I put that I had to cut quite a lot to make sure this submission made it before the end of the Nokia Game Jam, and I wasn't kidding. The game shipped without any combat what-so-ever, and even without the basic "options" menu I had planned!

Some major things are still missing.

  • The player has infinite health and stamina, and no on-screen prompts for either.
  • I have several more enemies that I want to add, each with interesting move sets, to really showcase what the combat has been designed for.
  • The new options menu needs to be made available from gameplay.
  • Finally (for now) combat audio cues need to be implemented.

I'm glad to say however much of what was missing, has been fixed, finished and put in the game.

  • An options menu accessible from the main menu, where you can change the Music and FX volume, and also change the on-screen button prompts between WASD, Numpad and a X-BOX themed Gamepad option. All controls work at all times, but this changes the on-screen prompts so you know what does what.
Selected options will be saved in a .cfg file in the same directory the game is run from, so it will remember your volume and controls preferences between play sessions!
  • The entire combat mechanic with the necessary animations, and with the first enemy... a BLOB.
You can attack, and kill the Blob and continue with your dungeon-diving adventure unhindered.
The player has a high attack (slash), low attack (stab), a block that can be held and a one-shot dodge move that all work behind the scenes now. In the future when the monsters are fleshed out, certain moves will need to be blocked, or dodged but not the other in order to avoid damage.
The enemy "AI" currently works, it selects a move and waits until it has the stamina to pull it off. As more advanced monsters are added the framework is there for them to attempt to block and dodge you back as well!

Some minor fixes and additions:

  • The .EXE icon has been fixed, previously it showed the wrong things at certain sizes.
  • The game has been released in 32 bit instead of 64, as let's face it a 84x48 pixel game doesn't need over 4GB RAM, and this means people with older systems can still play!

I also want to thank the couple of people who have posted with comments and feedback even on the very early version of the game! The feedback and interest in my little gamejam entry really makes my day, and it is beyond appreciated!
